Dining Chairs

Dining Chairs Upgrade: I’m on the hunt for new dining chairs for our apartment in Zurich. The dining space is much larger than in our previous homes, I spend a lot more time sitting at the dining room table, and I would like to invest in really comfortable chairs. I want them to fill up my space visually, be versatile to go with different style tables, and look elegant, but be practical for family life. I would prefer leather with a metal chair base.

My table is a Restoration Hardware waxed French oak dining table that is no longer available. I really love it because it’s been across the ocean in container ships on multiple trips and doesn’t look worse for wear: Kirkland to Holland, Holland to Kirkland, Kirkland to Switzerland. It is the table we use daily: for meals, puzzles, lego building, homework, computer work, and it’s practical.

Here are some photos of our table in it’s different homes and (with different chair types):

Original Dining Chairs

The original RH chairs did not fare well on the sea voyages, so they are no longer with us. While in Holland, I bought the Moroso Supernatural chairs, for extra seating while entertaining indoors and out. They’ve been a really good purchase as they look good with every table, are stackable, and are technically outdoor chairs so they clean up really well. I added the leather chair cushions from CB2 for extra comfort. Moroso supernatural are available in a variety of colors, but they’re plastic and great for additional seating, but not a permanent solution. Another popular plastic chair is the Kartell Masters chair. I considered this chair as well before buying the Supernatural, but it’s a bit popular and I wanted something less obvious.

I would like my new dining chairs to have an architectural element to them; to be an interesting shape. They need to be really comfortable and I’d like to incorporate metal and leather material as opposed to fabric or wood. I find these materials to be durable, and easier match with items I already own. They need to look attractive in multiple settings (Kirkland modern/ Zurich Apartment), and with different table types.

Here is the table we currently have in Kirkland, Washington. It’s the Restoration Hardware Klismos Outdoor Table:

Here are dining chairs I’m considering:

I really love all of the Flexform chairs. The Feel Good was my initial favorite with the extra padded seat cushion and curved low back, but the height of the chairback at 74cm is a little too low for my preference. It is available in a taller height, but the curved back becomes less obvious and I like that element. Flexform Hera comes in at 78cm tall. For comparison, the height of my current chair, Supernatural, is 81cm. It is available in leather with metal legs. (Both Feel Good and Hera happen to be designed by my favorite, Antonio Citterio)!

The other all leather options are nice, but they are similar to other chairs I’ve seen and I want something a little unexpected. The Giorgetti chairs are gorgeous, but a little formal for my setting and lifestyle.

I’ve ordered some leather samples from Flexform and I will let you know what I end up choosing!
