An Ode to the Shirt Dress (7 I love)

Ralph Lauren & Maxmara

Brooks Brothers

Here is my Ode to the shirt dress, which I love dearly. My love of shirt dresses has goes back quite a few years. Though JCrew carries many, they aren’t my favorite. (The fabric and sizing is often amiss.) Initially, I could only find them at Jcrew and Brooks Brothers, where the prices are higher, but the fabrics and cuts are better. They are super flattering, and an instant outfit.

After moving to Switzerland, I’ve rediscovered my love for Ralph Lauren. Most of the time, their fabrics and cuts are perfect, with a slighter longer hemline, which I prefer to the above the knee of Brooks Brothers. Honestly, knees aren’t that pretty, and once you sit down, the longer length is more comfortable. I have the olive green linen one above (and also in white), which I pair with either sneakers if I’m walking a lot, or Ancient Greek Sandals.

My requirements for dresses, clothes in general, are that they are a natural material, like linen or cotton, and that they are belted and have pockets.

The dress itself makes the perfect foundation to an outfit, which can then be accessorized with the a necklace or scarf, jacket or sweater, belt, shoes and a handbag. You instantly look put together. Also, the versatility of the dress with different accessories makes them a great travel outfit.

I often bring a sweater or blazer that can be layered on top. I always feel good in my dresses and I only wish there was the same option in winter… or maybe the next move needs to be to a warmer climate so I can wear dresses year round.

Update! I found a few in wool this winter of 2023 at Ralph Lauren. I recommend them both.
