A Tulipiere Vase Obsession

My fascination with tulips really began when we were living in Holland, where I saw my first Tulipiere vase. They are very celebrated there. Vases designed especially for tulips, tours of tulips fields at Keukenhoff in the spring when they come into bloom, and a movie called, “Tulip Fever,” about the first “stock” or tradeable currency, tulips!

Since then, I’ve begun collecting “Tulipieres.” The vase designed specifically for tulip bulbs and blooms. I must say, the tiered form really showcases the beauty of the tulip in all of its glory…

A Tulipiere Vase Defined:

tulipiere or tulip-holder, is defined as ornate vessel in which to grow tulips and is usually made of hand-crafted pottery, classically delftware. They are typically constructed to accommodate one bulb per spout with a larger common water reservoir base. They were not designed as vases for a cut bloom, as is sometimes supposed, though they could also be used for this. The boughpot and flower brick were types of vase for this.

Examples of Delftware Vases:

The most gorgeous, and Dutch inspired tulipieres are the delftware vases.

Some less expensive options can be found at Heinen Delfts Blauw. I’ve purchased several items from them, including the white and black versions of traditional tulip vases shown above.

We recently visited Eindhoven, NL and while browsing in the Bijenkorf, I came across the petite blue and white tulip vase above, Anoushka for &Klevering. They also make the cutest tea lights in the shape of Dutch houses.

Anyways. . . my whole point is, if you don’t appreciate tulips, perhaps consider a fresh perspective and a new vase!
