Currently Coveting a Savoir Bed (Desperately)

Currently Coveting a Savoir bed. Until recently, I had not seen a headboard that I just had to have. It seemed like the piece of furniture you could skimp on quality as it mostly serves as something you lean against, but doesn’t suffer the wear and tear of usage, like mattresses, bedding, or cabinets.

Over the years, I have had a couple of different headboards that have moved with me from house to house. The first I bought while living in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, was a caning headboard with Louis style end pieces from Ballard Designs. It moved with us to Holland and back, and was nice, but you couldn’t put it in front of a window because the light shined right through it. I tried backing it with fabric, which helped. You also couldn’t lean against it if you wanted to read in bed.

Next, I bought an upholstered wingback headboard. It has nice lines and nailhead trim, was cozier and more comfortable to lean against, adds height to the room, but the fabric is stock and I don’t like how you see the legs beneath the fabric board skirting.

Previous Beds, not a Savoir Bed

I have this thing, too, where I don’t like art hung above a headboard. It always looks too high, unless it’s a convex mirror or something small, and it competes with the focal point of the room, the bed!

I also don’t like hanging art on either side of the bed, over night stands. When you have a King bed that already takes up so much real estate in the room, adding more to that wall with art or mirrors seems a bit overdone in my opinion. You need lighting, and this also takes up visual space too, so perhaps skip the art!

If you remove the art on either side of the headboard, or the mirror above the headboard, the best way to make a visual impact is with the headboard itself, since it’s the focal point of the room. That can be either through the fabric or the shape, or both.

Inspiration Beds

But if I were in the market right now, I would go for one of the Savoir x National Gallery beds.

Savoir beds

With the Savoir Bed as the focal point of the room, you need little else. It is a showstopper. The art and interest all in one. I can imagine one of the above in my bedroom in Kirkland. It would look lovely with the mirrored nightstands and antique Dutch armoire. No need for art or adornment.
