Decking the Halls the Minimalist Way
When it comes to decorating for Christmas, I fall into the minimalist category. One way to incorporate Christmas decor without it feeling too overwhelming, if you are minimal like me, is to keep to natural greenery and a muted color palette. This could include but is not limited to natural materials such as raw wood, fur throws, and any cut greenery. This is definitely the point in the year when it’s time to remove some of your decorative objects in favor of holiday baubles. I think the Scandinavian countries do an excellent job of creating warmth and cosiness without it feeling like the elves took over your house.

The greenery is pretty easy to add anywhere: in a vase, along the fireplace, over a table or mirror, on the staircase railing… And despite my minimalist leanings, I do like to add a few items that help set the holiday mood. Over the years I’ve picked up a few items I love from CB2. Other companies, such as West Elm, Crate and Barrel, and Ferm Living, also offer neutral holiday items.

Holiday Lighting
Adding light in the darker months is a must. Other than the tree, I like to add light outside in places that are visible from inside, through glass doors and windows, so that I can enjoy them without it crowding my living space. Rather than the traditional lights on a tree or hedge, I love to use illuminated shapes. (They also take a lot less time to set up!)

For me, the greenery and the neutral yet festive items add to the Christmas spirit, without overwhelming the space. Happy Holidays, everyone.
