Designer Colin King

Interview of Colin King

If you want to know a thing or two about designer Colin King and his epic styling, start by listening to Athena Calderone’s interview of him for her podcast, More than One Thing. They are friends in life, so the interview is sincere and candid, as they know each other well. And they are both well-known stylists who have worked with some of the same brands.

Designer Colin King: Styling Work

With all of his experience styling for Zara Home, Amber Lewis, Crate and Barrel, West Elm, Anthropologie, recent collaborations with Danish brand, Menu, his upcoming book, Arranging Things (Rizzoli) and his limited edition collection with Beni Rugs where he was recently named Artistic Director at Large, he is no longer up and coming, but rather has arrived. His collection for Beni Rugs was featured at the lauded, Rossana Orlandi Gallery, who has a talent for finding and featuring the newest and best in the design world, this past June at Milan Design Week.

Colin King: Body of work

Colin’s work has a soulfulness to it. Obviously he chooses to live and shoot campaign ads in beautiful old architectural buildings, but beyond that, there is a patina to his work… I think he is capable of taking a piece that may not make a statement on its own, but in the setting with which he places it, and the objects that surround it, it begins to take on a storied history that may not belong to it, but makes it that much more interesting than it might have been when placed elsewhere, or by someone else.

That is the talent of Colin King, and why he can take mass produced objects and make them look meaningful. He assigns a story and a history to what would otherwise be a mundane, machine made object, and makes you want to buy it! Ask all the brands that have hired him!

Colin King’s Home and Office

Most recently, Colin’s Tribeca apartment was featured in Architectural Digest (October 4, 2022). What I think I love about his design is that none of it is expected. It is an experiment that has succeeded, or it wouldn’t be in his apartment or feature in his work. He doesn’t stop until he gets it right.
