I came across the work of Julie Hillman somewhere in the depths of Instagram, and was instantly smitten with her designs. She’s an AD100, New York city based designer who works with top clients who covet high end art and love the hunt to find the perfect pieces for their homes.

The Work of Designer Julie Hillman

Looking at the above images, you can see the art featured in her projects is remarkable and very curated. She often takes her clients to faraway places to find one of a kind pieces, like Venice biennale. Many of the furnishings she selects for her designs are also highly collectible, making her projects one of a kind.

What I think she also masters, is texture design. All of her projects seem injected with natural textures that are in abundance, and the way they interact with each other is intriguing. I would say she has a flair for the dramatic, and creates a sense of maximalism, but without chaos. It’s not too much, but just enough. There is a boldness to her designs. A Confidence.

Her Background

Julie began her career in fashion, with a degree from the Parsons School of Design. This must be where she mastered the mix of textures and fabrics. After starting a family, she turned her attentions to the home and the rest kind of took off organically. Though her spacing are “eye-catching,” with family at the heart, her designs are equally functional and meant to be lived in.

This is something I often wonder about some designers work that I am drawn to… They can be visually stimulating, amazing vignettes, and make for great magazine spreads, but would you want to live there at the end of the day. Julie seems to have mastered this balance of eye catching but also comfortable and liveable.

She states it best in her most recent mention in Architectural Digest:

I believe there should be harmony in every room in a home by mixing decorative and functional pieces where each piece is in conversation with one another while maintaining its own significance.
