Most Versatile Furniture Pieces to Own

There are certain pieces of furniture that become the workhorses of your home; the pieces you cannot imagine parting with because you interact with them on a daily basis, or find endless uses for them no matter what room you place them in, the versatile ones. The ones you move from house to house, swearing never to part with. I have a few of these, and they are the pieces of furniture I want to discuss today.

Design on Stock Bim Boms:

I first saw these when living in the Netherlands. Not only do they look nice in a room, with a slightly less common silhouette than the average footstool, they are endlessly useful. Keep them tucked under a table, or in front of a fireplace, under a desk or at the end of the bed; they are the perfect place to perch without taking up too much space in a room. They work well for extra seating around the fire or during book club, as well as a footrest when watching a movie. I have three of them that are in constant rotation around the apartment.

Hay Tray Tables:

I own five of these now and find they are in constant use as plant stands, nightstands, coffee tables, even the trays themselves are useful on their own.

You can even use them to corral your collections, or as a riser!

Step Stool:

I recently picked up this step stool at an antique shop in Zurich. My closet is such that I can’t reach or see the top shelves to grab my sweaters, so I’m constantly pulling this step stool out to search my shelves. It is also handy to access the higher kitchen cabinets. I love the fact that it is a beautiful wood and looks somewhat sculptural sitting out, but the functionality of it is great too, with the first two steps folding up into the base.

CB2 Steel Console tables:

I have two of these handy tables in white that I am constantly moving around my apartment. Sometimes I push them together to make one long table, and sometimes they are separated under artwork, but they also work well behind a sofa. I’ve used them at the top of my stairs on a small landing, and at the end of a narrow hallway to draw the eye down the long, narrow hallway. I couldn’t live without these tables.

Plinths:

I have several plinths that I use in various ways; one from CB2 that I use for a vase of flowers or to display a sculpture, and a marble plinth from Audo Copenhagen that I use as a table between two chairs. The great thing about plinths is they can add height to a room without taking up a lot of visual space. They are a great way to highlight small objects, and you can introduce a new texture or material, as they are made from everything from wood, to marble, metal to mdf.

Well, I hope you found some ideas for hardworking pieces of furniture that pass the test of time in terms of practically and looks. Do you have any pieces you can’t live without?!
