Shoe Styles, Then and Now

As the center of design, both in fashion and interiors, you can imagine that Milan is filled with fashionable people. Both the creatives who live and work in Milan, as well as the tourists that are drawn to the epicenter of design and the region which produces such fine goods. In the fall of 2021 when I was there, I could not help noticing everyone, men and women, wearing velvet venetian slippers. They come in every color and look good with everything and on everyone. Also, what a perfect way to bridge two seasons as the velvet adds a touch of fall to a summer ensemble.

So when I was walking through La Pinocoteca di Brera, I could not believe my eyes when I spotted those same shoes in an old masters oil painting, hanging on the wall…

Naturally, I had to have a pair. Initially I purchased an inexpensive pair, and though the style was right I had trouble wearing them for any length of time. That’s when I splurged on a pair from Le Monde Beryl. I already owned a pair in raffia and knew they were comfortable and the quality I was looking for. If you haven’t discovered Le Monde Beryl for yourself, you really should consider purchasing a pair.

Another timeless style is the Greek Sandal.

Here are some modern day versions of this centuries old classic:

I own a pair from Ancient Greek Sandals and they are also worth the investment. Some of their shoes are available in a comfort sole, which is thick and cushioned and oh so comfortable. I’ve walked miles in them and felt like I had sneakers on. The best part is, they won’t be going out of style any time soon!
