Zurich Apartment House Tour

Zurich Apartment House Tour

We’ve been in Zurich for just over a year now and here is our apartment! I brought our dining table and some smaller accessories, as well as beds and desks, from our Seattle home, but because we kept our house furnished in Seattle, we had some items to buy for the apartment.

I tried to do some furniture shopping in Seattle before the movers came, but without seeing the apartment first, some items I had the scale wrong (the sofa for instance!). Scale really is so important in a space. Though there are not many rooms in the apartment, the rooms are large and therefore, I needed a larger sofa, especially with the expansive windows.

Zurich Apartment Sofa:

The flooring throughout the apartment is a gray stone tile, which really allows sound to echo so we needed large rugs to add comfort, but also absorb sound. I started with the 10 x 14 rug in the living room and chose fabric for the B & B Italia Atoll sofa, based on the colors in the rug.

The leather chairs and cowhide ottoman come from Room and Board and are neutral and durable fabrics that could be placed in a bedroom or media room in future homes.

Zurich Apartment Daybed:

The daybed is from a Swiss furniture store called Pfister and is by a brand called Y!. I cannot find it online anymore, but it is a very versatile piece because it opens into a queen bed, which is convenient since we do not have a guest room. It is a favorite spot to sit in the apartment and has already proved useful for movie nights and sleepovers. The other advantage of a piece like this is it provides ample seating without blocking the view between rooms since it lacks a high back, like a sofa or loveseat. The boucle fabric is popular right now, and though I love the texture, it isn’t the most durable fabric.

Zurich Apartment Media Cabinet:

The media cabinet is also from Pfister by a brand called Johann Jakob. We were challenged by the off center low fireplace, which would have been better treated with a custom furniture piece, but this does not make sense for us as renters. I spent a lot of time moving the pieces around to find a way to balance the room and fireplace.

The antique mirror above the fireplace, used to anchor the room and draw the eye to the fireplace, was purchased on 1stdibs, which is such a great resource for one of a kind pieces and offers worldwide shipping. I highly recommend spending an afternoon perusing their site. The American version of this website is Chairish, which is also great but I believe is limited to shipping within the US.

Zurich Apartment Tour Bookcases:

Finally, in the dining room we added height with the MDF Italia Random bookcases. Not only do these draw the eye up, they also provide overflow storage for stemware and other kitchen items that are worthy of display.

I picture these bookcases being useful in many spaces, like a bedroom or office, music room, basement…. They are narrow in width so the options are endless, and I find the compartmentalized structure ideal for display.

I hope you enjoyed the tour!
