Architect and Interior Designer

Jeffrey Dungan is an architect and interior designer, with a Rizzoli book The Nature of Home: Creating Timeless Houses, who is based out of Birmingham, Alabama. He grew up in the rural south on his family’s farm, inspired by the nature that surrounded him, as well as the sense of history and permanence that is prominant in this region. Though his work has taken him all over North and Central America, he feels most at home in the south, having graduated from Auburn University in the 1980s. He went on to start a firm with a partner, winning numerous coveted awards, and opened his eponymous firm, Jeffrey Dungan Interiors in 2015.

Timeless Design

You notice a modernity to Jeffrey’s traditional houses, which most often feature beautiful raw woods on floors and ceilings, as well as natural stone fireplaces, and many covetable kitchen nooks. This is because he values natural textures and how they patina over time, creating homes that are intended to last for generations.

His Roots

You can see an appreciation for his Alabamian contemporaries, Bobby McAlpine, Ray Booth and Gil Shafer, as their designs share some common characteristics. Rooted in history, with classical elements informing the modern sensibilities, they also share a rustic charm and appreciation for genuine materials. This creates a sense of authenticity and the ability to stand the test of time. Examples of all four gentlemens’ work below:

I find Jeffery’s work so soothing and comforting to look at, you can easily imagine yourself walking into one of these rooms and sitting down at the nook or in front of the fire. They are pretty dreamy in their balance of clean lines, rustic finishes, comfortable linens, soothing tones, and enviable architectural features. Maybe one day…
